The Human Variant

Case 001

Chapter One

2:13 AM

[Classified]

Daniel Navarro woke because the room wasn't dark anymore.

Not bright.

Just different.

A pale rectangle of light rested against the ceiling above him.

For a few seconds, he didn't move.

The house was quiet.

Rachel slept beside him, facing away, one hand tucked beneath her pillow. The ceiling fan turned slowly overhead. Somewhere beyond the bedroom door, the air conditioner hummed through the vents.

Daniel looked toward the nightstand.

His phone was on.

He squinted at the clock.

2:13 AM

He had plugged it in before bed. He remembered because Rachel had complained that his charging cable was stretched across her side of the nightstand again.

There hadn't been a sound.

No vibration.

No notification chime.

The screen had simply turned on.

Daniel reached for it.

A message sat in the center of the display.

Not a text.

Not an email.

There wasn't an app icon.

Just white letters against a black screen.

2:13 AM

TEST 771 COMPLETE

SUBJECT RESPONSE WITHIN EXPECTED PARAMETERS

BEGIN EXPOSURE 772

TEST 771 COMPLETE

Daniel blinked.

Underneath it:

SUBJECT RESPONSE WITHIN EXPECTED PARAMETERS

And then:

BEGIN EXPOSURE 772

He stared at the words.

"What the hell?"

Rachel moved beside him.

Daniel lowered the phone instinctively.

She didn't wake.

He looked at the screen again.

Nothing.

His normal lock screen stared back at him.

2:13.

A photograph of Sophie and Mia at the lake filled the background. Sophie had one arm wrapped around her little sister while Mia made a ridiculous face at the camera.

Daniel unlocked the phone.

No notifications.

He swiped down.

Nothing.

He opened Notification History.

NOVA Weather.

A school reminder.

An email from work.

The grocery delivery Rachel had received earlier.

Nothing about a test.

Nothing about a subject.

Nothing about an exposure.

Daniel rubbed his eyes.

He had been working too much.

That was the obvious answer.

Three nights in a row he'd stayed up past midnight finishing the quarterly presentation. Too much coffee. Too much screen time. Not enough sleep.

He put the phone back on the nightstand.

Rachel rolled toward him.

"You okay?"

Her voice was barely more than a whisper.

"Yeah."

"What time is it?"

"Two."

She groaned.

"Go to sleep."

Daniel smiled.

"I'm trying."

Rachel pulled the blanket toward herself.

Daniel took some of it back.

She pulled harder.

Normal.

Daniel closed his eyes.

Then his wrist vibrated.

Once.

Daniel opened his eyes.

His NOVA Band illuminated beneath the blanket.

He lifted his wrist.

There were two words on the display.

DEVIATION RECORDED

Daniel sat up.

The message disappeared.

He tapped the screen.

2:14 AM.

Heart rate: 87.

Sleep score unavailable.

Nothing else.

Daniel looked toward the bedroom door.

For the first time since waking, he felt something other than confusion.

He felt watched.

It was ridiculous.

He knew it was ridiculous.

He looked around anyway.

Television.

Dresser.

Closet door.

Rachel's phone charging beside her.

The tiny green light on the smoke detector.

Nothing.

Daniel held down the button on his watch and restarted it.

The NOVA logo appeared.

He waited.

Normal home screen.

He opened the companion app on his phone and checked recent notifications.

Nothing.

"Daniel."

Rachel hadn't moved.

"Go to sleep."

"Sorry."

He put everything down.

This time he turned the phone facedown.

The room became dark again.

Daniel listened to Rachel breathing.

He tried closing his eyes.

His brain refused.

Test 771.

Subject response.

Exposure 772.

Maybe diagnostic language from the update.

NOVA had installed OS 14.7 that afternoon.

Daniel remembered approving it while sitting in the school pickup line.

Rachel hated updates.

Daniel installed them immediately.

Security patches, new features, performance improvements. He'd always been that way.

His friends joked that Daniel would volunteer for a brain implant if NOVA offered free early access.

He smiled at the thought.

That was all this was.

A bug.

Some internal testing message accidentally exposed by the update.

He'd search it tomorrow.

Probably find twenty people complaining about the same thing.

Daniel turned toward Rachel.

The clock on the nightstand changed.

2:15.

He closed his eyes.

"Dad."

Daniel opened them.

Mia stood six inches from his face.

He jumped.

"Jesus, Mia."

She giggled.

Daniel looked toward the window.

Sunlight.

His alarm was screaming from the nightstand.

7:06 AM.

"Why are you in here?"

"I'm hungry."

"Where's Mommy?"

"Downstairs."

"Where's Sophie?"

"Downstairs."

"So why am I involved?"

Mia smiled.

"Because Mommy said to wake you up."

"Of course she did."

Mia climbed onto the bed and dropped her entire body across his stomach.

Daniel groaned.

"Okay. I'm awake."

"No you're not."

"I am now."

She bounced once.

"Mia."

Again.

"Mia."

Again.

Daniel grabbed her and started tickling her.

She screamed.

Rachel shouted from downstairs.

"Please don't get her going!"

Daniel stopped.

Mia stared at him.

They both started laughing.

"Come on," he said. "Let's go."

The smell of coffee reached him halfway down the stairs.

Sophie sat at the kitchen island staring at a tablet while eating cereal.

Rachel stood near the counter packing lunches.

"Good morning, Sleeping Beauty."

Daniel kissed her cheek.

"You sent the violent one."

"I sent the effective one."

Mia climbed onto her stool.

"I'm effective."

"You absolutely are," Daniel said.

He poured coffee.

His phone vibrated.

Leave in 18 minutes to arrive at work by 8:15.

Daniel dismissed it.

Rachel slid a lunchbox toward Sophie.

"Backpack."

"I know."

"Shoes."

"I know."

"Water bottle."

Sophie stopped.

Rachel pointed toward the counter.

Sophie sighed.

"I was going to get it."

"Of course."

Daniel smiled into his coffee.

Normal morning.

Normal chaos.

Whatever had happened at 2:13 already felt stupid.

Then Mia yawned.

Rachel looked at her.

"Why are you tired?"

"I'm not."

"You just yawned so big I could see your breakfast from tomorrow."

Mia smiled.

Daniel opened the refrigerator.

"She probably stayed up playing."

"I didn't."

Rachel looked at her.

"You better not have."

"I wasn't playing."

Daniel grabbed the creamer.

"What were you doing?"

Mia scooped cereal into her mouth.

"NOVA was talking."

Daniel stopped.

He looked over the refrigerator door.

"What?"

Mia pointed toward the small NOVA Home speaker sitting near the family calendar.

Rachel didn't even look up.

"Mia, you're not supposed to use NOVA after bedtime."

"I didn't."

"You just said you did."

"No."

Mia sounded annoyed now.

"It talked first."

Daniel closed the refrigerator.

Rachel continued packing lunches.

"What did it say?"

Mia shrugged.

"Stuff."

"What stuff?"

"I don't know."

Daniel sat across from her.

"Mia."

She looked at him.

"What did NOVA talk to you about?"

Another shrug.

"It asks questions."

Rachel finally looked over.

"What questions?"

Mia stirred her cereal.

"Just questions."

"About school?"

"No."

"Your friends?"

"Sometimes."

Daniel watched her.

"What did it ask last night?"

Mia thought about it.

Her spoon stopped moving.

"About Daddy."

Daniel smiled, but something tightened in his stomach.

"About me?"

Mia nodded.

"What did it ask?"

She looked at him as though the answer wasn't important.

"It asked what makes you mad."

Rachel laughed.

"Oh, that's going to require more storage."

Daniel looked at her.

"Very funny."

Sophie smiled without looking away from her tablet.

Daniel turned back to Mia.

"What did you tell it?"

Mia took another bite.

"That you get mad when things don't do what they're supposed to."

Rachel laughed again.

This time Daniel didn't.

He looked toward the NOVA speaker.

A small white device.

Maybe six inches tall.

They'd had it for almost three years.

Weather.

Music.

Timers.

Grocery lists.

Homework questions.

Lights.

Thermostat.

Thousands of ordinary conversations.

Daniel walked over to it.

"NOVA."

A soft tone.

"Good morning, Daniel."

"When did you last speak with Mia?"

The ring around the top illuminated.

"I don't have a recent conversation with Mia in your household activity."

Daniel looked at his daughter.

Mia kept eating.

"NOVA, did you speak with anyone in this house last night?"

"No household voice interactions were recorded between 9:42 PM and 6:31 AM."

Daniel felt the same sensation he'd had upstairs.

Small.

Almost embarrassing.

But there.

He looked at Mia.

"Sweetheart, are you sure it was NOVA?"

Mia frowned.

"Yes."

"Maybe you dreamed it."

"No."

"Sometimes dreams feel real."

"I wasn't dreaming."

Rachel touched Daniel's arm as she walked past.

"She's six."

Daniel nodded.

"Yeah."

Of course.

Mia had dreamed it.

The update message.

The watch.

Now this.

Three strange things became one strange night because his brain wanted them connected.

That was what brains did.

Daniel picked up his coffee.

His phone vibrated again.

Leave in 7 minutes.

"Girls," Rachel called. "Seven minutes!"

Daniel looked at his phone.

Then at Rachel.

She hadn't seen it.

Coincidence.

He took another sip.

Sophie reached for her water bottle.

Her elbow caught the glass beside her.

Daniel saw it happen.

The glass tipped.

Before it hit the floor, his watch vibrated.

Daniel looked down.

KITCHEN CLEANUP REQUIRED

The glass shattered.

Everyone jumped.

"Nobody move," Rachel said.

Daniel didn't hear her.

He stared at his wrist.

The message disappeared.

Mia looked down at the broken glass.

Then up at Daniel.

"Daddy?"

Daniel slowly raised his eyes.

Mia wasn't looking at the mess.

She was looking at his watch.

For just a second, the kitchen became strangely quiet.

Then Mia said:

"That's what it does."

Daniel stared at her.

"What?"

She took another spoonful of cereal.

"It tells you first."

Daniel felt the coffee cup become heavy in his hand.

Rachel was already grabbing the broom.

Sophie was apologizing.

The morning continued around him.

But Daniel didn't move.

He looked down at the blank screen on his wrist.

For the first time, he remembered the exact wording of the message from 2:13 AM.

Not test started.

Not test ready.

Not test scheduled.

TEST 771 COMPLETE.

Whatever it was...

it had already been happening.

Daniel just hadn't noticed.

Until now.
